Hendrik Buck

Undergraduate at the University of St. Gallen, working across economics, mathematics and computer science.

01About Hendrik Buck

Interested in mechanisms more than in disciplines.

I grew up in Munich and left Germany at sixteen for Gresham’s, a boarding school in Norfolk, where I finished the International Baccalaureate with 45 points out of 45. I moved to Switzerland in 2025 to study at the University of St. Gallen.

What holds my interests together is breadth rather than a single subject. I want to know how things actually work — economies, organisations, technologies, institutions — and the explanation from one field is often the thing missing in another. At school that meant history and mathematics side by side; since then it has meant economics, data analysis and a fair amount of automation.

Where I want to end up is more technical than where I am now: the quantitative end of economics, and beyond it mathematics, computer science and engineering. I am not there yet — the coursework is only starting to move that way — but the direction is deliberate.

03Selected work
  1. Automated outreach engine

ESPRIT St. Gallen · Excel/VBA and Outlook

A system for personalised outreach at scale: dynamic placeholders, German and English templates, preview and send controls, and a dashboard tracking every campaign. What had been a folder of copy-pasted drafts became a standard workflow anyone on the team could run.

Campaign setup fell from roughly 45 minutes to under five; preparing an individual email dropped by about 80%.

  2. Deal generation, rebuilt as a system

ESPRIT St. Gallen · Board Member, Head of Sales & Product

ESPRIT is a student-run consultancy whose pipeline lived largely in institutional memory. I built the structure underneath it — segmentation and lead-scoring logic, a database of some 3,000 leads, defined funnel and follow-up processes, and a record of past projects, contacts and outreach that outlasts any single board.

Roughly CHF 100k of project revenue across five mandates.

  3. Strategy mandate for a listed European retailer

ESPRIT St. Gallen · publicly listed retailer, market capitalisation above CHF 3bn

The largest mandate I have worked on: a publicly listed retailer well above CHF 3bn in market capitalisation, a household name in its home market and one of the more prominent companies in its sector in Europe. Three strategic options, each examined for commercial upside, financial implications and execution risk, then reduced to a single recommendation and presented to senior stakeholders on the client side.

  4. Company and transaction analysis in live M&A

    Corporate finance internship · lower-mid-market M&A · Munich

Live sell-side, growth and special-situation processes. I built buyer universes across strategic and financial acquirers, prepared company profiles, and ran comparable company and precedent transaction analysis alongside company financials and three-statement models — work that fed teasers, information memoranda and valuation.

  5. AI integration roadmap

Selective university case competition · aluminium packaging

Mapping where AI could plausibly do real work inside a manufacturing business, then ranking the candidates by business impact and reach rather than by novelty. An early pass at a question I keep returning to: which parts of an organisation are genuinely amenable to automation.

  6. Investment Society

    Gresham’s School · founding member

A weekly forum for equity pitches — business model, market position, financials, valuation — argued in front of people willing to disagree with you. It passed thirty members and the school later formalised it as its official Economics Society.

06Elsewhere

I have played the piano for more than ten years and it remains the one thing I do that has nothing to do with the rest of this page. Otherwise: chess, skiing, volleyball. At Gresham’s I spent sixty-odd hours tutoring younger pupils in mathematics and literacy and trained as a peer mental-health contact.
